OAU
Heads of State and Government Support Ben Ali's Initiative for the creation
of a World Solidarity Fund
Heads of
state and government of the Organization Of African Unity (OAU) meeting
in Durban, South Africa, decided on Monday July 9th 2002, to speed up
the process of setting up the World Solidarity Fund.
By this
decision, the conference of the heads of state and government reaffirmed
its support to president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's initiative, as well
as its conviction that the fund would be a great contribution to the
strengthening of international solidarity and cooperation, with a view
to eradicating poverty in the world, particularly on the African continent.
This would be in line with the aims set by the program of fighting poverty
fixed during the September 2000 United Nations Millennium Summit.
The conference
also reasserted that this fund would represent an efficient instrument
to achieve the targets of the African union and the new partnership
for development in Africa (NEPAD).
Furthermore,
the heads of state and government called on the OAU/African union Secretary-General
to carry on efforts and consultations with the United Nations Secretary-General
and to follow closely negotiations on the mechanisms for setting up
this fund, scheduled to take place during the next session of the United
Nations General Assembly.
