U.N. General Assembly Adopts Draft Resolution
calling for ''Creation of World Solidarity Fund''
New York,
21 December 2002 (Tapex)
A decisive
step has been taken on the way of materializing President Zine El Abidine
Ben Ali's initiative with a view to creating a World Solidarity Fund
to fight against poverty, combat inequality in the world and establish
an atmosphere of mutual aid between peoples.
In fact,
the United Nations' General Assembly has adopted the draft resolution
calling for ''the creation of a World Solidarity Fund for the elimination
of poverty and the promotion of human development in developing countries.''
On this
occasion, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) administrator March
Malloch Brown praised this adoption. He voiced his enthusiastic support
for the creation of this fund, which draws its inspiration from the
successful experience of the national solidarity fund established by
President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and which made it possible to reduce
the rate of poverty to about 4 % in Tunisia. He said he was delighted
that ''the United Nations had decided to try out this innovative mechanism
worldwide.''
For his
part, Tunisia's permanent representative to the UN reminded of the world
solidarity fund's targets, and launched a call to the international
community, the governments, the private sector, the foundations, the
international organizations and the civil society in general to give
a substantial contribution to the world solidarity fund in to enable
its functioning in the shortest terms.
Several
delegations paid tribute to President Ben Ali's initiative and praised
Tunisia for this new mechanism meant to finance development particularly
in most underprivileged countries.
